On My Plate: Dishoom – Bombay Cafe
by MFD Food ed, Tamara Samman

Dishoom – Bombay Café, was one of the most mesmerizing Indian restaurants we’ve ever been to.  The brasserie-like restaurant captured the Bombay essence with all its décor which all seemed to somehow complement and recreate the authentic Bombay cafes.  The signature marble-top tables, the lights hanging down from the ceilings with the wires exposed, the circulating fans that create the impression of Bombay’s humidity, to the Bollywood portraits.

To start off with drinks, we were absolutely fascinated by the unique Bombay-style cocktails – but ultimately decided on the refreshing Virgin Bombay Colada (pineapple, coconut milk, herbs and spices), which I would recommend with no hesitation!

Next we shared a few main dishes – we ordered the traditional Vegetable Samosas which were perfectly crisp and juicy with flavorful spices; Keema Pau (spiced minced lamb with buttered bread) – this was our first time tasting this dish and it was delicious (one of our best picks that day!), the Chicken Berry Biryani was heavenly as the berries added a sweet touch to the dish, and an order of Raita (cool yoghurt with fresh cucumber and mint) on the side incorporated nicely with the biryani.

Lastly, we always seem to manage to save some room for dessert – we decided to try the Pineapple & Black Pepper Crumble (served with cinnamon/vanilla ice cream).  This was an amazing finish to our meal, a mouthwatering warm dessert, which made us feel a little less guilty as it was a healthier option because it was a seed granola.

Perfect for: Casual meal with friends and/or family at anytime of day (breakfast /lunch /tea (chai time)/ dinner.  It was very lively when we were there for lunch on a weekend!
